Poor relationship, flagging performance

AAP It's not you honey, it's us. Evidence is mounting that a poor relationship is a significant contributor to the problems many men can experience in the bedroom, an Australian academic says.

Professor Marita McCabe points to a recently released US study on male sexual dysfunction, and said its findings were echoed in the early results of Australian research still underway."The US research indicated that men with sexual dysfunction were more likely to have conflict in their relationships," said Prof McCabe, from Victoria's Deakin University.

"(Along with) lower levels of intimacy and higher rates of anxiety when compared to men who do not have sexual problems."

Prof McCabe said one in three men would suffer from sexual dysfunction at some point in their lives with premature ejaculation the most common complaint.

A range of medical and pharmaceutical interventions were available, she said, but this could overlook the broader emotional issues linked to the health of couple's relationship.

Early results from an online survey - which is seeking more input from Australian men - has found "men with sexual problems also tend to have issues in their relationships", Prof McCabe said.

"We now need more men to complete the study so that we can better understand the difference between men with sexual dysfunction and those who do not experience problems in this area," Prof McCabe said.

"As well as the high overlap between (the various) sexual dysfunctions."
